As technology has grown, companies are constantly on the lookout for something new to bring out to the market. E-readers were introduced in 2007 as a way to allow people to store hundreds of E-books on one device rather than need to take a lot with them while travelling. This was happily taken by consumers and it has lead to newer inventions and better products being placed onto the market. Just one of those is the Viewsonic VEB 620.

This E-reader has a 2 GB hard drive, which makes it possible to hold between 1000 and 2000 E-books. All of these books are placed in alphabetical order to make it easier for you to find the book that you want to read. All of these books can be stored on the device in a variety of ways, including the most popular ePUB , PDF and Txt.

It uses the tradition E-ink screen, which makes it possible to read your books in the sunlight and at any angle. This is also better on the eyes than an LCD screen, but it does mean that you will need a light to be able to read at night. The screen is 6 inches and has a resolution of 800×600. This resolution is the best of any other E-reader out there and makes the text much sharper on the screen. The refresh rates are also a little better than any others.

If the 2 GB memory is not enough, there is an SD slot, which you can add up to an extra 32 GB of E-books. You can also add music and audio books to be able to listen while on the go. There is a headphone slot to listen in private.

It is possible to read in either landscape or profile, which can be aid with viewing textbooks or larger PDF files. However, the buttons are a little harder to use in landscape. They are places at either side of the device for page turning and there are also navigation buttons at the bottom of the device.

The Reviews

So that you can decide whether this is the device for you, it is important to consider all of the advantages and disadvantages of buying the Viewsonic VEB 620 rather than opting for something else.

The size is perfect for carrying around and it is lightweight, which means that it is comfortable to hole. The problem is that the navigation around the device is much harder than with any other E-readers out there. The buttons are big and clumsy and you do need to hold it with both hands to be able to turn pages.

However, to stay on the positives of the device, the space that is available must be mentioned. The 2 GB is plenty of space to include the books that you want to read and also any textbooks that you will need for your studies. It is also generally cheaper to have these textbooks rather than buying the paper versions from a store.

The text on the screen is also exceptionally clear. The resolution is the best out on the market when it comes to E-readers and it makes reading a book just like reading one in print, if not even better! The E-ink screen also prevents you feeling like you are on a device and not a paper book.

To bookmark a page, you can digitally turn the page down on the book. This makes it simple to go back to the page that you were reading before. However, there are problems with jumping if you just want to jump chapters; the E-reader does not give you this option on the chapter section, which puts students at a major disadvantage.

The screen settings are also a problem when it comes to reading some books. Rather than changing the layout so that it fits the screen, you sometimes need to keep moving left and right to be able to read a whole book; this is especially the case when it comes to PDF versions.

Because the books are stored in alphabetical order, there are no options to manually search for a book by title or author. This can cause problems if you have a lot of books on there since on the device alone you could have 1000 books on there. You can find that you are going through a long list for a while until you finally get to the letter that you are looking for, let alone actually finding the book.

While you can store music on the E-reader, it is not very easy to actually play it while you are reading a book. It can be just as easy to have your MP3 player or cell phone to play the music from. This is, however, a personal preference.

There is no wireless on the device, which means if you want to browse the internet on the go, you will need a tablet or laptop computer – or use your phone. This also means that you need to connect your device to your computer to be able to change the E-books on the E-reader and add more books. Of course, this can all be done straight onto an SD card, which can be added to your Viewsonic VEB 620.

If you already have E-books that are compatible with the Amazon Kindle, you will not be able to use that with this E-reader. It cannot support Microsoft Word either. You cannot make any notes on your books either, which can put students at a disadvantage.

In Conclusion

While this is excellent if you want to read simply books that have been designed for E-readers, this is not compatible for many PDF versions. It can take a while to get the font size right and then you may not actually be able to read it.

The device is not the easiest to navigate around but it is one of the best for the screen resolution and clarity. This is something that you will need to decide on by trying out the device.

    Dear Peter Zohan,
It will be very good if you can help me…
I cannot delete any file – any book – in my ViewSonic VEB 620.
I used some pdf and others formats they don’t open. Tablet says it is a not supportable format. But even following the Guide, I cannot delete them, or even others I have readed yet.
I thought perhaps if I format the tablet it could run.
I have contacted the page of ViewSonic but they did’n t answer yet.
    Thank you very much,
    Ana
